The MapTrix Kit |
|
MapTrix is a self-instruction programme for learning to read a topographic map.
It can be used by individuals doing home schooling or by up to 40 learners, making it suitable for
classroom teaching too. The elements are organised like a deck of playing cards, giving MapTrix a
game-like appeal.
MapTrix is suitable for the Geography section of the Social Sciences
Learning Area (Grades 7 - 9) and for FET Geography (Grades 10 - 12).
The outcomes-based learner support material teaches 12 basic geography lessons while developing the skills
required to read a 1:50 000 topographic map and broadening the learner's knowledge of South Africa.

Each MapTrix Kit is packaged in a big green box containing 52 work cards, 52 answer cards, 10 Learners' Booklets,
an Educator's Guide (with Poster) as well as a 1:2 000 000 Wall Map of South Africa
and a Topographic Map Sheet Index.
A video is also available that explains the value of topographic maps and offers guidance in implementing MapTrix.

Front
- Each one of the 52 MapTrix work cards features a different 5'x5' extract from various South African topographic map sheets.
The 10 graded map reading questions lead learners from easy to complex concepts.
If you can't answer the questions, don't cheat by looking at the back of the playing cards!
Back
- This is where all the geography terminology is explained.
The geography lesson and 10 illustrated symbol explanations provide the 'scaffolding' required for effective learning.
Learners use this information with the maps to answer the questions.

No, this is not a gambling school, it's the MapTrix playing card deck with the
answers to the map reading questions on the back.
Once learners have found the answers to the map reading questions and written them in the
Learner's Booklet, they use the back of the playing cards to see if they are correct.

Learner's Booklet
Here is the booklet where learners fill in their answers and once they have
marked them, this is where they record their score so they can see how they
are doing.

Educator's Guide
The educator's guide and a poster are very handy if ideas are
needed for introducing the programme in the classroom or for individual
learners who are their own educators.
